Dear Families,
Today Ballin' Burn from the Apex Team visited our classroom! We talked all about the 1st habit in becoming a GAME ON leader, which is to be a go-getter! There are 6 parts to this habit that you can ask your student about! The Apex team informed my students that every one of them must be a go-getter in order to be a game changing leader.
If you haven’t already, please be sure to download the Apex Leadership Co app or log in to www.myapexevent.com with your child’s “Access Code” which can be found on the front of their pledge kit. Log in and begin watching this year’s GAME ON theme videos. These videos are used as a tool to reinforce each leadership lesson outside of the classroom.

Our goal is to get to $20 per lap by tomorrow so we can earn Extra Recess as a team!

Dear Families,
Today was a very exciting day as we kicked off our Apex Leadership Co - FUN RUN program with a Pep Rally! Students learned that over the next two weeks they will get the chance help our school (and our classroom) by earning pledges. And the best part is Apex introduced their new leadership theme: APEX GAME ON!
We are all getting excited about health and fitness here at Alston Ridge Elementary. The Apex athletes will be on campus teaching us about these awesome leadership lessons and will also be playing games with our kids during lunch and recess.
Today, your child will be coming home with a pledge kit. This pledge kit has all the information regarding the FUN RUN program inside, so be sure to open it up and take a look. One of my favorite parts about Apex is the inclusive program; every student is included, regardless of financial participation! Each student will receive a T-shirt at the event and a wristband for each day that is representative of that day’s leadership lesson. I encourage you to ask your child about each wristband at home to continue conversation about the leadership lessons.
Here's the important part! The majority of the funds raised this year will go to Innovation & Excellence in Teaching through funding Faculty Professional Development and Grants; Technology Upgrades to develop a Technology lab space and expand classroom capabilities; and, Playground Enhancements to include Soccer Goals, Grounds Improvements and Investments in a new Play structure.
My goal is to raise $100/lap to help our school.
Be on the lookout for daily updates regarding our pledge totals as a class along with other information regarding the big event next week.
Thank you!
Coach Dodson

Families,
Last week, you should have seen a green sheet of information sent home with your child about EOGs. Students are allowed to drink water during the breaks of their testing. So, they will each have a water bottle smaller than 12 oz on the floor next to their testing desk.
I have created a sign-up genius for your help. I need 4 families to help us! Over this weekend or next to add a 12-pack of 8 or 12 fl. oz of water bottles so that each student can have one on each day for EOG testing on May 24th and May 25th!
If you are one of the families who would like to contribute, please use this link to sign up and bring the bottles by May 22nd.

We are going to the Prairie Ridge Ecostation next Tuesday, February 14th. For this final field trip of the year, students will be learning more about plants and soils from a program at the Ecostation in Raleigh. Field Trip Reminders!
• Please make sure that your child arrives to school on time on Tuesday, February 14th. We will be leaving right after announcements to load the bus by 9:15, so we can leave promptly at 9:30.

• Wear sneakers!
• Everyone needs to pack a lunch today! When we return to Alston Ridge at 1:30, we will eat lunch in the classroom. The cafeteria will be closed, so the children will be unable to purchase a lunch (please include a drink).

We are going on a field trip!
We are going to the Prairie Ridge Ecostation next Tuesday, February 14th. For this final field trip of the year, students will be learning more about plants and soils from a program at the Ecostation in Raleigh. This is a great place for students to get their hands dirty and in the dirt to learn more about germination, plant life cycle, and soils, and take a hike to see locally grown plants in this region of North Carolina!
Field Trip Reminders!
• Please make sure that your child arrives to school on time on Tuesday, February 14th. We will be leaving right after announcements to load the bus by 9:15, so we can leave promptly at 9:30.
• Wear an Alston Ridge Shirt if you have one!
• Wear sneakers!
• Everyone needs to pack a lunch today! When we return to Alston Ridge at 1:30, we will eat lunch in the classroom. The cafeteria will be closed, so the children will be unable to purchase a lunch (please include a drink).

We are going on a field trip!
We are going to the Planetarium next Tuesday, January 31st. Students will be watching the “Earth, Moon, and Sun” show at the UNC-CH Planetarium. The show will enhance a science unit on the study of the relationship between the sun, moon, and Earth. Students find this to be one of their favorite units of the year! The planetarium is a wonderful experience during the day and if you have time to go for a nighttime viewing at a later time I highly recommend another family outing!

This year we are only required to meet for parent/teacher conferences once this year (but I am always willing to meet with parents as needed upon request). Below is a link to the signup genius for parent/teacher conferences. I will be holding parent/teacher conferences from October 10 – December 2. Please pick a time that works best for you. If there is not a time that works for you please let me know and we will arrange a time that is convenient for you. If you cannot make conferences this time I will be holding conferences again in the Spring.

You can pay this online on the school website under the Parents tab and click on Online School Payments. Please send this in by October 5. Student should pack a lunch this day unless they have returned the bagged lunch form to me already. Sadly this is a field trip with limited space and don’t have room for chaperones.
